The Shivers Cancer Foundation, a 501(3)(c) tax exempt foundation, was originally funded with the proceeds from the sale of a non-profit radiology and cancer treatment center. The original intent was that Shivers Cancer Foundation would contribute its entire corpus to facilitate the development of a comprehensive cancer treatment center serving all Central Texans regardless of their ability to pay. The vision was to consolidate the broad spectrum of diagnostic and treatment services into a single facility to provide top-quality care that was readily accessible, convenient, cost-efficient and most importantly, effective.
The financial and market hurdles to develop a world-class comprehensive cancer treatment center have proven to be significant. Shivers Cancer Foundation remains committed to its original vision, and it actively promotes the concept of comprehensive cancer care. Until such time as a viable plan is presented, Shivers Cancer Foundation will make grants to non-profit entities to fund cancer initiatives in Central Texas with special emphasis placed upon clinical services. Recent grant recipients have included the Lance Armstrong Foundation (cancer patient navigation program), Hospice Austin (care for terminal cancer patients), Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas (mobile blood collection bus and cancer registry and tracking) and the University of Texas at Austin School of Nursing (oncological nurse scholarship fund).
Shivers Cancer Foundation is administered by a Board of Directors and Secretary to the Board who contribute their time and services on a non-paid basis. The only significant operating expenses incurred are for professional services relating to management of the investment portfolio and preparation of tax and regulatory filings.
